U.S stocks finished the overnight session mixed with strong gains from energy stocks lifting the Dow Jones but a surprise drop in consumer confidence and sell off in technology and bank shares dragging the NASDAQ and S&P 500 lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 14.21 points or .14% to 9882.17.
Australian stocks are set to open fairly flat on Wednesday, with weaker-than-expected consumer confidence data in the United States seen pressuring companies with big U.S. earnings such as Westfield Group (WDC) . Look for the XJO to find support around 4700-4750 for a move back towards recent highs over the next couple of trading sessions.
Company News
Top lender National Australia Bank Ltd ( NAB) reported an 8 percent rise in its second-half earnings, slightly better than expected. However full year net profit fell 43%, as rising bad debt and one- time tax and legal charge offset higher revenues. Furthermore the bank declared a final dividend of 73 cents a shares, down from 97 cents last year.
Investors will also keep an eye on third-quarter inflation data due at 11:30 am, a key factor in the Reserve Bank of Australia's interest rate decision due next week.
