US markets managed to close a volatile trading session 21 points higher on Friday night, with additional volatility on the back of quadruple witching. The biggest movers for the session came from the tech sectors, namely Blackberry maker Research In Motion and Oracle. Retail sectors were held back by bad weather in the northern hemisphere, with blizzards hampering Christmas shopping. This did give a boost to online retailers. At the close the Dow was up 21, the NASDAQ higher by 31 points.
Domestically, the SPI has us opening 16 points higher, with energy likely to outperform the broader market. Spot Oil climbed 2% Friday night after reports of escalating tensions between Iran and Iraq. Base metals were mixed on Friday night, but BHP ADR trading in NY is pointing to an open this morning at 41.18 compared with just 40.60 a share domestically on Friday.
If you are looking for action this week you may be disappointed, with a lack of economic data both at home and abroad. We do have some Motor vehicle sales due out today, and some 3rd quarter financial accounts out on Thursday. Other than that there is a US GDP report due to be released Tuesday night.
It is likely to be fairly quiet until after new year’s, so we suggest you take advantage of the additional time value in Options out to January and get as much premium in as you can ahead of the Christmas break.
