US Markets managed to close higher on Friday night on the back of better than expected consumer confidence data which crept to the highest level since September 07. Also released was Manufacturing data that, although it failed to get into any sort of growth territory, was seen as a positive sign by the market. However, there was further deterioration in car sales which fell to the lowest level in 30 years. At the close the Dow was up about 40 points.
Oil was a major player on Friday, adding a further 3.6% to gains from earlier in the week to close above USD 52 a barrel. Look for some continued strength in the local energy stocks when the market opens this morning.
Base metals were also broadly higher on the back of strong manufacturing data that came out of China on Friday. This should provide some support to the likes of BHP and Rio this morning.
The SPI has us opening some 23 points higher, but volume may be on the light side given the Labour day holiday in Queensland today.
