After a volatile session on Wall Street, stocks staged a late rally pushing the Dow up 76 points or 0.8% to 9786.04 at the closing bell. Earnings continue to be the main force driving the market higher, led by Ford Motors which tacked on 58 cents or 8.3% as the car giant reported a third-quarter profit and said it would be “solidly profitable” in 2011 on cost cutting and a turnaround in its North American business.
Australian shares are likely to rise on Tuesday, supported by firm oil and metal prices and a positive finish on Wall Street.
Volumes are likely to be lower than usual due to a public holiday in Melbourne where the country's richest horse race, the Melbourne Cup, will be run.
Investors will also be on the alert for Australia's central bank's interest rate decision, due at 2:30 pm AESDT.
Analysts expect the bank to raise rates by 25 basis points to 3.5 percent, with some chance of a 50 basis points rise.
Have a Dollar on Bart’s son’s horse Zavite, you should get around $70.00s for it.
