U.S. stocks rose as an improved outlook for industrial companies and better-than-estimated data on consumer confidence and home prices overshadowed concern government deficits will derail the economic recovery.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 11.56 points, or 0.1 percent, to 10,907.42. About 7.3 billion shares changed hands on all U.S. exchanges, 13 percent fewer than the three-month daily average as trading slowed amid the Passover holiday.
In the U.S we have seen rising stock prices, a stabilizing housing market and fewer firings, giving households hope that the recovery from the worst recession since the 1930s will be sustained.
On the local front, Australian shares should open the session fairly flat today as commodities were mixed overnight, suggesting no real sector will be in the spot light. With the Easter break around the corner the market will gradually move higher over the next few days on low volumes. After the long weekend look for the market to break out of the sideway trading range.
NAB announced agreed terms with AXA S.A. overnight. ACCC approval is still awaited. It will be interesting to see if AMP now revises it’s offer or leaves it to NAB.
With the low volatility in the market, we are finding clients are writing calls close to the money to maximize premium. If you are pursuing this tactic be sure to leave enough space to break even if exercised.
