A bounce for beaten-down financials like American Express and Bank of America helped the Dow Jones Industrial Average finish in the green. The Index rose 58.7 points, or 0.72%, to 8174.73, cutting its losses for the year to date to 6.9%. Crude oil futures plunged 9.1% as the market anticipated that oil and fuel inventories would continue to rise due to declining demand. Gold fell $5.70 to USD $897.05.
Australian shares will be flat to slightly weak today, with falls in metal and oil prices expected to pressure mining companies.
LGL
Lihir Gold Ltd the second-largest gold mining company on the Australian Stock Exchange, said fourth-quarter production rose 87% to a record after acquiring mines last year.
Production was 315,484 ounces in the three months ended 31 December 2008, the Port Moresby-based company said today in a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange. That compares with 168,370 ounces a year earlier and an analyst estimate of 278,000 ounces.
WDC
Westfield Group, the world’s biggest shopping-center owner by market value, will write down assets by $3 billion and said earnings may fall this year as US consumers spend less.
Operating profit will probably be 97 cents to $1 a share compared with $1 per share for 2008. The dividend for 2009 will be similar to last year’s full year distribution $1.065.
