Years can pass when he finds very little to do with Berkshire’s ever increasing capital. In fact, he makes no secret that one of the greatest challenges Berkshire faces is “to generate new ideas as rapidly as we generate cash”ii, so we’re taking notice now Buffett has been making moves.
In his latest Letter to Shareholders, Buffett announced “We’ve put a lot of money to work during the chaos of the last two years. It’s been an ideal period for investors: A climate of fear is their best friend. Those who invest only when commentators are upbeat end up paying a heavy price for meaningless reassurance.”
45 years of phenomenal growth
The value of Berkshire Hathaway has grown at a rate of 20.3% compounded annually over the 45 years Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger have been at the helm.
And they consistently outperform the S&P500. “We have never had any five-year period beginning with 1965-69 and ending with 2005-09 – and there have been 41 of these – during which our gain in book value did not exceed the S&P’s gain,” Buffett reportsiii.
A bright future for Berkshire?
The coming years will reveal just how well Buffett has repositioned Berkshire’s assets for growth while he saw the chance.
